Innovative call for the regeneration of the former slaughterhouse in Varese and the Belforte district
The Municipality of Varese is moving towards an integration of urban and social policies, in line with the EU Urban Agenda and Agenda 2030. For these reasons, it intends to launch a process of valorisation of the former civic slaughterhouse that will make it a multifunctional centre of services for the citizens of the neighbourhood and the whole city, and thus contribute to the European challenge of making cities more inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable.
The first phase of the work was dedicated to an analytical reading of the needs, potential and fragilities of the neighbourhood, and resulted in the drafting of a strategic vision document that outlined several possibilities for action, in addition to the candidature of Varese as “experimenter city” within an H2020 project on the experimentation of tools to assess the social impacts of urban policies. The second phase of the work focused on the construction of an innovative call for proposals, based on the “Reinventing Cities” model, aimed at identifying multidisciplinary teams that propose project solutions oriented to the satisfaction of collective interests, also through the provision of services in agreement with the P.A., and that are at the intersection between market opportunities and public policy objectives.
