An experimental and participatory approach to design new uses for urban voids
an innovative approach to regeneration
Buildings that have fallen into disuse, derelict areas and historic heritage sites in a state of disrepair represent an opportunity for local development, provided that new functions and management models can be identified – something that is not always easy to predict on paper. Transitional reuse is an innovative design method that involves communities in practical trials, designed to gradually guide the search for sustainable solutions.
For over a decade in France, the approach of temporary reuse has become part of the toolkit of urban planners and city makers, and today it represents an area of intervention that both public and private operators view with interest. In Italy too, temporary use can serve as an important reference model for territorial development initiatives, drawing on the regulations on temporary uses recently introduced at national and regional level.
In recent years, KCity has embarked on a process of specialising in the methods and techniques of temporary reuse and, with the support of Fondazione Cariplo, has recently developed a methodology applicable to a wide range of cases.
On this webpage, we have begun to collect various materials generated through this process. This page is intended to grow as KCity continues its work, with a view to promoting the wider adoption of this approach, which aims to improve the performance of regeneration processes.
